Mindy, 27, and Larry, 57, are saving up for a procedure that Mindy describes as the ‘mild version of In Vitro or IVF’.
With a 95 percent chance of success, the happy couple, from Florida, are now more than hopeful they will be able to become parents in the near future - even though Larry had a vasectomy back in the early 90s.
Larry already has a son, 27-year-old Bruce Mikla – the same age as Mindy - but this would be Mindy’s first child.
When Larry and Mindy first met, Mindy didn’t feel like she wanted children, but as her big wedding day loomed, she began to have a change of heart.
Mindy told Barcroft TV: “We have come to a decision on what we want to do with pregnancy in the future. It really is a big life decision.
“At first when we were getting married, I was okay with not having children. I completely knew and understood that Larry couldn’t have them.
“I was totally like, ‘no no it’s alright’. And then all of sudden we’re getting ready to get married and I’m like, ‘oh no I think I do’.
“I don’t think a lot of people expected us to go down this route.
“We’re going with, I guess it’s called the ‘Tesa Nesa’ procedure, it’s like the mild version of In Vitro.
“It’s a little pricey, but we’re saving up for it now!”
Larry added: “We were going to do a vasectomy reversal.
“But because of the amount of time, and my age, there was some concern whether that would be successful or not.
“So that opened up the option to do what we ultimately decided on. So we’re going to try that, and if that’s doesn’t work then we always have adoption.”
The pair met in 2012 in Ohio, when retired police officer Larry was the first responder to a minor traffic incident involving Mindy’s car.
At first, Mindy thought Larry was ‘cute, but a little too old’ – even so, the stars aligned soon after with the pair flirting and having secret dates.
Larry said: “I have won the lottery with Mindy. You know, you look at me and then look at her and you realise there is a definite age gap.
“But that thought process didn’t really register with me at the beginning. It was more just like ‘wow.’”
When out and about in public, Mindy and Larry get stares wherever they go – often by passers-by who think they are dad and daughter.
“Not everybody is going to approve of your relationship and you just have to do what makes you happy and not worry about what everybody else thinks,” Mindy said.
With that said, Mindy and Larry have always preferred to have the approval of their close friends and family – something they feared might be affected by their baby news.
Larry said: “I thought the reaction would be mixed. There would be some happiness, and some people that were surprised.
“You know, I thought her friends were going to think ‘well that’s just a normal thing at her age; you get married, you have children’.
“Whereas the expectation with someone my age is, ‘you’re retired, you go play golf’.”
But the couple were overjoyed to hear welcoming feedback both from Larry’s son, Bruce, who they hadn’t spoken to for two years because of an unrelated falling out, and Mindy’s best friend, Angela Buettner.
Bruce said: “Of course it’s very strange that she’s younger than I am.
“The age gap, I mean, I think everybody has some sort of a reaction to it. Not exactly negative but it’s just like ‘wow’.
“I can see he’s so much happier than he was with his first marriage. It’s definitely noticeable, I think they’re both very happy and I absolutely want to be in their lives, there’s no question about it.
“I don’t really know about being a brother, we’ll kind of get there when we get there. Just deal with everything else until then.”
With Angela adding: “It never was a big problem for me, I just think you should love whoever you love.
“He treats her like a Queen and I feel like that’s what everybody looks for, you know, for someone to just love them unconditionally.
“I’m thrilled that they have decided to have a child. That’s what I think Mindy always wanted.”
